Rough River Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake on the Breckinridge–Grayson county line. Its big open main lake is good for skiing and tubing, and its long creek arms are good for fishing. The Corps counted about 1.69 million visits in FY2024, more than Nolin. Rough River Dam State Resort Park sits by the dam with a lodge, a restaurant and the lake's largest marina.

Fall and winter: Rough River has the biggest seasonal swing of the close-in lakes: from 495 ft at summer pool down to 470 ft at winter pool. Many ramps and coves get shallow as the lake drops. Check the Rough River Lake level before you tow.

Boat ramps

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife lists 19 access sites. The main public ramps:

  • State Park Marina (Grayson County): paved, free, open all year.
  • Laurel Branch (Breckinridge County, off KY 110): paved, multi-lane, courtesy dock, fee.
  • Axtel, North Fork and Cave Creek: paved, fee.
  • Peter Cave (at the marina): paved, fee.

There are also several smaller free ramps in lake subdivisions. A local marina guide reports that the State Park ramp and the newer third lane at Axtel are the two launches still usable at winter pool.

Rough River Dam State Resort Park

The resort park at the dam has a lodge with Grayson's Landing restaurant overlooking the lake, plus the marina and public ramp. The park is the easiest base for a first visit. Check Kentucky State Parks for lodge rooms and seasonal hours.

Dam safety work

The Corps has been studying and carrying out dam safety work at Rough River. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's early 2026 fishing report mentioned a public meeting about the dam project. Watch Corps notices for any closures near the dam and tailwater.

Fishing

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's weekly reports for Rough River regularly cover crappie on brush and standing timber, bass on channel bends and steep banks, and hybrid striped bass. Read the current report and the lake's special regulations before you go.

Food and lodging nearby

Grayson's Landing is at the state park. The Sometimes Grill at Nick's and the food counter at Peter Cave Marina are on the water. See restaurants on the water for which ones you can reach by boat. For lodging, look at the state park lodge, Vrbo cabins around the lake, and motels in Leitchfield and Hardinsburg.

Nolin Lake is about 50 minutes away by car (routing estimate), so you can cover both lakes in one weekend. See the Nolin Lake guide.

FAQ

How far is Rough River Lake from Louisville?
Rough River Dam State Resort Park is about 75 miles from downtown Louisville, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by car (routing estimate). Nolin Lake is about 50 minutes farther south and east.
Which Rough River boat ramps work at winter pool?
The state park ramp near the dam is a free, paved, multi-lane ramp listed as open year-round, 24 hours, by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. A local marina guide reports that the State Park ramp and the newer third lane at Axtel are the two launches that stay usable at winter pool. Check the live level before you tow.
Are the Rough River marinas open in winter?
Nick's Boat Dock posts that it is closed for the season. The state park marina is listed as year-round with limited hours. Peter Cave Marina is listed as year-round with limited hours by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. Call ahead between November and April.
Why does Rough River Lake drop so much in the fall?
Rough River is a flood-control reservoir. The Corps lowers it from summer pool (495 ft) toward winter pool (470 ft) after the summer season to make room for winter and spring rain, then refills it in spring. That 25-foot swing is larger than at Nolin or Taylorsville.
